Throughout November, the DFW singer-songwriter community was buzzing after the announcement of Chevy’s Sonic Sounds competition. Chevy invited solo or duet singer-songwriters to submit MP3s and videos of original music to their website. The artists were then voted on and the top 15 advanced to the semi-finals. From this group, judges narrowed down the list to top 5 lucky finalists. These finalists then had the incredible opportunity to perform live at The Loft at this very special event on December 13, 2011 in front of a panel of judges.

Mark Hanland, the regional Chevy chief marketing director expressed his goals for the event:

We hope to discover some terrific acoustic, ‘indie’ talent right under our noses. Great music doesn’t always have to be turned up to eleven. We’re looking for outstanding singer-songwriters who can make big musical moments happen on a simpler, smaller scale.

Despite being a corporate event, the enthusiasm of the performers and audience helped create a really fun, energetic evening. The Loft’s intimate atmosphere provided a perfect space to highlight the acoustic, subdued nature of the artists.

Aryn Michelle won the competition and was awarded a $100 gift certificate, a one-year subscription to an online gig-booking service, and a brand new acoustic-electric guitar from Taylor.

Check out this video from her performance at the contest:

Whether you’re in town for Dallas conventions, a corporate event or just for vacation–you need a place to stay. Luckily there are plenty of hotels centrally located in Downtown Dallas. Just as many Dallas venues hold corporate events, there are plenty of comfortable hotels for you to relax in.

Hotels Near Downtown Dallas
For those attending an event at the Dallas Convention center, there are plenty of luxury hotel options just a short distance away. Corporate venues in Dallas are often near the downtown area, where there are equally as many entertaining spaces–including the Trolley in Uptown, the Farmers Market in Downtown and plenty of bars.

Magnolia Hotel Dallas
Located on Commerce Street in the Main Street District of Downtown, the Magnolia Hotel is a 29-story upscale hotel that for many years was the tallest building in Texas (1923-1927), and the structure is now a Dallas Landmark. Built in 1922, the hotel was originally the headquarters for the Magnolia Petroleum Company. In 1977, developers from Colorado purchased the building and transformed it into the 330 room luxury hotel that it is today.

“I booked a room in this hotel for the sole purpose of convenience.  It is walking distance to the Dallas Rock ‘N’ Roll Half Marathon start and the Dallas Convention Center where the Expo is held.” -yelp customer review

Aloft Dallas Downtown Hotel
For those interested in a more urban environment, the Aloft Hotel on Young Street near the Historic District Downtown provides an excellent setting. As a vision of the W hotel chain, Aloft “offers atmospheric public spaces where guests can mix and mingle” in non-traditional environments. This hotel would be ideal for a young professional. City Tavern and the Gilley’s Complex are also conveniently located nearby–for those interested in bars and live music in Dallas.

“Loved the historic district and the lovely walk on a busy Saturday or a night out Sunday. A walk around the town is a must! Lovely views and busy nightlife.(…)” -yelp customer review

Ritz-Carlton Dallas
Exhibiting a more classic, luxurious style, the Ritz-Carlton in Uptown is just 1.2 miles from the convention center, and features a beautiful restaurant downstairs. For those tired of corporate catering and looking for something more upscale, the restaurant at the hotel will surely suffice. As the city is mostly driving centered, there are plenty of Dallas valet services at hotels, and the Ritz-Carlton is no exception. This classic hotel has all the amenities for those who prefer to travel comfortably.

“I travel a lot for work and you will get a friendly front desk from time to time, but looking back….everyone went out of their way to make this stay memorable for us. (…)” -yelp customer review

If you happen to be in town attending a convention, Dallas provides the perfect cultural backdrop to corporate events. Not only does Dallas feature the famous Dallas Convention Center and a wide variety of other Dallas venues, but the city is also engrossed with an interesting range of activities– all conveniently located close to the Downtown area. Whether you’re trying to entertain your employees, or hoping for an afternoon of site seeing, Dallas has plenty to offer.

The Gilley’s Dallas Complex
Conveniently located less than a mile from the Dallas Convention Center, Gilley’s entertainment complex features seven unique spaces– hosting everything from corporate events to live music concerts. South Side Ballroom, South Side Music Hall, The Loft and Jack Daniel’s Saloon are all popular Dallas venues that feature a wide variety of entertainment–from indie music to country shows, even corporate or private parties and other large-scale events. If you’re hoping for a true Texas experience, you can eat barbeque, ride a mechanical bull and maybe even listen to local Dallas music–all within the Jack Daniel’s Saloon. The delicious menu also provides an excellent opportunity to break away from the corporate catering that is so often prevalent at conventions.

City Tavern
Located directly in the heart of the Downtown District on Main St., City Tavern serves food and drinks 7 days a week, with occasional live music. Dallas also has a rich abundance of local music, and City Tavern has consistently expressed interest in supporting the scene. Even if there isn’t a show that night, City Tavern is definitely worth visiting and has daily drink specials.

Victory Park
This massive development located in the Northwest Downtown area features several high profile businesses including the American Airlines Center, The W Victory Hotel, WFAA Channel 8 Studio, the House of Blues and more. If you’re lucky enough to be visiting during basketball or hockey season, you should definitely plan to see the Dallas Mavericks or the Dallas Stars–both of which are housed in the American Airlines Center.

Historic West End District
South of Victory Park, but still conveniently located Downtown, the Historic West End District definitely provides an interesting glimpse into Texas, and even American history. With an abundance of tall Oak trees and beautifully renovated historic buildings, even just walking around the West End District is entertaining. For those interested in American History, you can always visit the grassy knoll, the site of JFK’s assassination, and then walk over to the Sixth Floor Museum to learn more about the history and conspiracies associated with the high profile event.  You can even get some drinks at Hard Rock Cafe, Gater’s Croc n Roc, Dick’s Last Resort or West End Pub.

Reunion Tower
Often noted as the most recognizable landmark in Dallas, the Reunion Tower is part of the Hyatt Regency Hotel complex, and is definitely worth visiting. Featuring an observation deck, the tower facilitates one of the best views of the Downtown area. Also, you can even visit celebrity chef, Wolfgang Puck’s, fine dining restaurant, Five Sixty.

The Dallas Farmers Market
If you appreciate more low-key past times, you should definitely visit the Dallas Farmers Market district, located in Southeast Downtown. Open 7 days a week, this market is consistently buzzing with locals and farmers–most of which travel up to 150 miles. There is a wide variety of foods, from raw bulk fruits and vegetables to speciality and prepared dishes.

Arts District
In addition to the wide variety of concerts and conventions, Dallas also has a very active and intriguing art scene. The Arts District is home to a number of venues, including AT&T Performing Arts Center, Dallas Museum of Art, the Nasher Sculpture Center and more.

So if you need a relaxing break from a corporate event, Dallas provides plenty of enriching opportunity.

Cuervo GamesIt’s not uncommon for large promotions to be held at Gilley’s Dallas. Each year we produce dozens of product launches and special events, helping companies reach out to their audience on a personal level and build awareness around their brand. In our business we have the opportunity to coordinate major productions with exciting features like audio/video production, live music and entertainers, games and amazing decor in the special events we produce.

Spring 2011 brought us a one-of-a-kind special event featuring the Jose Cuervo liquor brand as the primary sponsor. Cuervo created an spectacular event filled with many kinds of entertainment, including a series of Wipeout-style games, a live music concert featuring members of electronica/rock band LMFAO and of course lots of Jose Cuervo. Attendees got free and exclusive access to one of this season’s most interactive and sensational special events.

Gilley’s Dallas features several large parking lots in addition to the seven special event venues hosted inside the Gilley’s complex. The Cuervo Games 2011 event was held outside the complex in the newly paved parking lot across the street where there was sufficient capacity to admit the thousands of invitees to this remarkable special event. Gilley’s staff operated several mobile bars, accommodating the large crowds of people with full beverage service. Our new restaurant The Jack Daniel’s Saloon, open 7 days a week, provided food service and air-conditioned comfort to the guests of the event.

One of the unique features of Gilley’s Dallas is our ability to host multiple events at a time. Saturday the 21st of May we hosted both the Cuervo games and a live music concert in The Loft featuring Austin’s psych-rock band The Black Angels. Fortunately the spacious parking lots behind the Gilley’s Dallas entertainment complex can accommodate several thousands of guests. While the party raged across the street in the venue’s parking lot, the concert upstairs in The Loft was able to accommodate the several hundred guests with great audio/video production, full bar service and great live music.
